At First Sight

In June of 1909, three men cautiously guided their mules over the rough turf covering the steep Grassy Mountain that rose before them. As they reached the open grassland that lay atop the peak, the leader of this expedition drew in his reins and sat gazing in disbelief. For as far as the eye could see, these men were surrounded by a dream of misty blue peaks and rolling green valleys, enveloping them in a surreal tableau. To the west lay Mount Mitchell, the Black Brothers and Celo. To the south, Linville Mountain, Turkey Cove, the valley of the North Fork of the Catawba River, and, in the distance, the South Mountains. To the east and northeast, Table Rock, Hawksbill, and Grandfather. Lastly, to the north sat Roan Mountain, partially obscured by the slope they stood upon and the dense canopy of chestnut trees

Our Town’s Name

These awe-inspiring, sweeping panorama views of deep valleys and distant ranges inspired the name Little Switzerland, as it bore an unmistakable resemblance to the foothills of the Swiss Alps.
